DISTANCE LEARNING OPENS DOOR TO CHARTERED STATUS

The institution is collaborating with four universities, including the Open University, to ensure that members have access to distance learning to study the relevant modules to help them to become chartered. Registration as a chartered engineer is an essential requirement of a professional's long-term career development, yet the challenge has always been how to find time to study while having a busy job. A logical solution is studying by distance learning. Pioneered by the Open University more than 40 years ago, distance learning - or supported open learning as the OU calls its method - allows students to study in their own time, when and where it suits them. They receive regular support from tutors, study advisers and other students via online forums. The collaboration between the IMechE and the universities will enable those with a bachelor's degree to build upon this to reach masters level while still earning and without putting their careers on hold. Modules can be selected and a further learning plan created to work towards becoming a chartered engineer.
