The newly opened £4 million extension to the National Railway Museum in York will no doubt have an army of breathless trainspotters beating a path to its door. It is crammed to the roof with previously unseen artefacts that will satisfy even the most fervent desire for rail memorabilia. But the new wing aims to do more than just preach the wonder of railways to the converted. It has been conceived to give visitors an insight into the various engineering skills required to build and run a railway network. Instead of merely putting untouchable exhibits behind a rope cordon, the new wing focuses on visitor interaction and tries to explain the kind of work that goes on behind the scenes.
