CPSC ON PACE FOR 500+ RECALLS AND 600+ SECTION 15s IN FY 2008

Barring an unlikely slowdown, CPSC is set to handle record numbers of recalls and Section 15 reports in fiscal 2008, which ends September 30. At the end of three quarters (October 2007 to June 2008), CPSC had announced 415 recalls, just 58 shy of the 473 it handled in all of fiscal 2007. CPSC has been dealing with many more than 58 recalls per quarter for at least 19 straight quarters (see first chart below), and it has averaged roughly twice that for 10 straight quarters. Thus, it is on track to top 500 recalls this year. Indeed, although figures for actual fiscal years (September to October) all were below 500 for 2004 to 2007, looking at various 12-month periods (see second chart below), CPSC handled over 500 recalls during six of seven 12-month periods since the second quarter of fiscal 2006. However, the 12-month period that just ended (July 2007 to June 2008) marked a slight slowdown, but it was second only to the preceding 12-month period (PSL, 4/7/08, p. 1) - 549 vs. 557 recalls.
