Chronic wounds such as pressure sores and diabetic foot ulcers are hard to treat, partly due to the difficulty of skin remodeling, which requires keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Researchers have known that wound healing depends heavily on a protein found in skin elastic fibers, called elastin, as well as a fibroblast-derived protein, called keratinocyte growth factor (KGF).
