This paper presents a switched-reluctance-motor direct-drive hydraulic press controlled by a self-tuning dead-zone compensation fuzzy logic controller. In the direct-drive hydraulic press, the motor works only when the hydraulic press is in operation, so the motor does not need to work continuously, which can reduce the electrical energy consumption. Nevertheless, the performance of the hydraulic press is limited by the dead zone of the switched-reluctance motor. A self-tuning dead-zone compensation fuzzy controller has been designed to solve this problem. The proposed controller has been simulated and then implemented in the hydraulic press. Normal operation and no-load tests have been carried out on the hydraulic press according to the planned motion path of the punch. The experimental results show that the switched-reluctance-motor direct-drive hydraulic press performs well with the proposed controller.
