Industrial chimneys: a review of the current state of the art

The author is to be congratulated in encapsulating the state of the art in this varied subject in only eleven pages of text. I have been interested in reinforced concrete chimneys for a number of years and, back in 1975, formulated section design curves in accordance with CP 110. With the advent of the CICIND Model Code and ACI 307-88 and -95 I have been making comparisons to give assurance to my design curves. Figure is a compilation of ultimate load operating curves for the three standards for cases of no opening, and of one opening of 30° subtended angle. These are for a typical selection of steel and concrete strengths and proportion of reinforcement.
