Bridging the Ironbridge Gorge. The Jackfield Bridge, Shropshire: design and construction

Studies into the replacement of the 1909 grade Ⅱ listed Hennebique reinforced concrete Free Bridge over the River Severn in Shropshire concluded that an unusual cable-stayed design best met the demands of the unique location in a world heritage site, some 900 metres downstream of the world famous Iron Bridge. The new Jack-field Bridge was opened to traffic in October 1994. This paper describes how the physical and environmental constraints were translated into the design and explains the features of the detailed structural design. The construction of the new bridge and the demolition of the old bridge are also described.
