The original Geotechnique symposium in print on stiff and sedimentary clays was held in May 2007 and papers from the conference were subsequently printed in two successive editions of Geotechnique. This book, which brings together all the submitted papers under one cover, is welcome since it acts as a single reference point for a subject that has much relevance for geotechnics in the UK as a whole. There is a good mix of contributions from academia but also, and perhaps evenly more importantly, from those in industry who have to provide design solutions for these materials on a regular basis.
