Revisions to the English building regulations came into force last month, requiring the fabric energy efficiency of new dwellings to be calculated along with the achievement of lower carbon dioxide emissions. David Bleicher of BSRIA explains. Revisions to the energy efficiency requirements of the English building regulations (HMG, 2010) on conservation of fuel and power came into effect in April 2014. The most noticeable change for new dwellings is a requirement to calculate and exceed a fabric energy efficiency target, as well as achieve lower carbon dioxide emissions. Fabric energy efficiency is measured in kilowatt hours per square metre of floor area, and takes into account the space heating and cooling demand - even in dwellings where mechanical cooling is not provided.
