Since our last issue there have been some significant world events which have not only demonstrated the power of the sea but also its importance as a means of communication and supply. The ELJ has just published its new White paper on Transport 2050 and, on 28 March, Siim Kallas, the Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for transport, said, amongst other things, that the EU needed a 40% cut in shipping emissions by that date. One thing we can be sure of is that marine engineers and technologists will be met with many challenges over the next few years.
