The legacy of R&D

Welcome to April's edition of JMET. Engineering and technology applied to the maritime environment is increasingly wide ranging and it is interesting to observe how research and development constantly changes the way things are being done. For instance, a century ago steam reciprocating engines were commonly used for ship propulsion, 50 years on it was the steam turbine and today it is predominantly the diesel engine. What will it be in fifty years time?
