In 1880 Alexander Graham Bell sent his voice over a sunbeam using his newly invented Photophone. Bell believed this concept to be much more significant than his wire-bound telephone that had made him rich and famous. Bell was correct, but the world would wait more than a century for light-based communications - photonics - to really succeed.
