Handle the return current in your system before it becomes a signal integrity, reliability or regulatory problem. Look for ways to improve your designs in the areas of stack-up, plane splits, via transitions and connector pin and signal assignments. Review the complete return path of all high-speed signals on printed circuit boards, connectors and cables, looking for the hidden return current. Find places where the path is broken and provide a fix before it becomes a production nightmare. By understanding these simple return path concepts, problems and solutions, it is possible to incorporate the invisible signal return current into every design and insure more reliable designs.
