If We Are. in Kansas and we want to drive to San Jose, the most important guideline is to head west on I-70. If we want to go to Austin, we head due south on I-35. When we start our trip, a map of the U.S. and a compass are the only navigational tools we need. What's important initially is the general direction to head. And while a U.S. map and a compass might not help us to navigate to a final destination such as the Technology Museum in San Jose or the Congress Bridge in Austin, they help us get started in the right direction.
