Even in better times, Dick Rutan's big "adventure" makes a compelling story. As pilot of the Voyager, Rutan commanded the first nonstop, non-refueled flight around the world. In recalling the tale, he centers on the perils and demands of preparing for and making the trip. But the defining moment comes not from pilot Dick but brother Burt, who designed the plane. In a moment of self-doubt, Dick asks Burt how he keeps his head. Burt's response: "A person's ability to deal with chaos will define his creativity." It would behoove Rutan's audience ― he keynoted IPC Printed Circuits Expo in late March ― to heed such sentiments: They'll need to be creative to make it survive this extended manufacturing slump.
