Moisture Design of Slab-on-Ground Structures in Finland

The objective of the study was to determine the heat and moisture behavior of slab-on-ground structures by in situ monitoring of real structures and numerical analysis. The subgrade under the insulated slab of the heated building warms up to the equilibrium temperature, which varies between +15 and +17℃. Furthermore, the relative humidity of the subgrade pore air is close to RH=100%. The hygroscopic moisture of the subsoil is more essential in moisture design than capillary movement, which should be prevented. The moisture condition of the slab-on-ground structures alters radically during the life cycle of a structure. At least three divergent characteristic situations can be distinguished, and all three must be considered during the design process: (1) construction phase and excess structural moisture; (2) operational life of the building; and (3) damage control and repair survey.
