Alaska: Going into the Alaska tourist season, uncertainty was the watchword. The cruise lines have been and will continue to discount their product heavily. It has been reported that discounts are as steep as 40 percent when compared with last year's prices. Seven-day cruises on Holland-Am erica or Celebrity were available for less than $400.00 per person. While the ships are eventually going to sail at close to capacity, no one can predict the spending patterns of the visitors once they reach their Alaskan destinations. Last year, Juneau welcomed about 1,350,000 cruise visitors. This year, the city is expecting at least 975,000 during the "season."
