The Eastern Sun, which sailed from Mobile for Germany and the United Kingdom on November 19, 1919, was the first ship controlled by what would become the Waterman Steamship Corporation. The fledgling organization soon instituted a program of measured expansion and diversification that saw the Ryan Stevedoring Company organized in 1924. Two years later the Mobile, Miami and Gulf Steamship Company was established to serve ports in PuertornRico, the West Indies, and Florida. It was from the MM&G that the Waterman Steamship Corporation evolved.
