摘要

Mathews County, Virginia, is a peninsula on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Its primary landmark is the New Point Lighthouse, commissioned by President John Adams. It's remote and rural, a traditional farming, fishing and seafaring community. The author, a former newspaper writer and shipping company employee, notes that "the pinnacle of achievement in Mathews was to become a captain, to command a ship at sea." And in World War Ⅱ they did, as merchant mariners, in greater numbers than almost any community in America. The Mathews Men tells the story of the Hodges family and their neighbors against the U-boat assaults off the U.S. coasts and around the world.
