SINCE ITS PUBLICATION IN 2018, THISbook has become a standard reference on carrier operations during World War Ⅱ. While the book does discuss the various naval battles in which carriers participated, the author is more concerned with the how and why of carrier operations. The author's primary concern is with the progression in strategic and tactical naval doctrine that replaced the battleship as the (dominant arbiter of naval battle with the aircraft carrier. This change in strategic and tactical naval doctrine is documented by examining the development, between 1920 and 1945, of aircraft carriers and their aircraft by the navies of Great Britain, the United States and Japan.
