Shrinking Operating Margins Have Forced Many Manufacturing Companies to Look for Better Ways to operate their production assets and reduce operating costs. Next to feedstocks, energy represents the second largest variable operating cost component for manufacturers. Unfortunately, many companies treat their utility operations as a cost center and restrict capital expenditures. However, there are opportunities to reduce operating costs of on-site power plants including selling excess capacity and fuel switching.
