"Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades." This Lyric, Which Comes from a 1986 Pop Song by the Group Timbuk3, captures the blinding hot nature of the power generation business today. Utilities, unregulated subsidiaries, non-utility generators, equipment suppliers and A/E firms—all are reveling in the power boom. Not everyone's a winner, of course. That's impossible in an open, competitive market. Consumers, via outages and higher rates, and smaller utilities, via high-priced electricity purchases, are feeling the heat in certain areas of the country. Still, from a power generation perspective, there are enough winners, and big winners, to state firmly that times are indeed good.
