Fish could soon be migrating downstream with greater safety and in greater numbers because of a new hydro turbines design developed by Alden Research Laboratory and Concepts/NREC. Design of the new turbine is in response to increased attention directed at improving conditions for migrating fish and FERC licensing requirements to reduce fish injury at new and existing hydroelectric plants. During downstream migrations, fish must pass through the power turbines unless water is diverted around the plant. Diversion of water reduces power output.
