RECOVERY AT KINGSTON

On Dec. 22, 2008, about 5.4 million cubic yards of coal ash were released at Tennessee Valley Authority's Kingston Fossil Plant. The spilled ash covered nearly 300 acres, closed the rail line that supplies coal to the power plant, damaged a portion of a public road, and blocked the Emory River. The Kingston incident made news around the world. Testifying to the U.S. Senate on Jan. 8, 2009, Tom Kilgore, TVA's then President and CEO committed to "... a first-rate job of containment and remediation of the problems caused by the spill. We are going to be able to look our neighbors in the eye and say that TVA is doing the right thing."
