The berthing process is among the least efficient element of overall port handling, a new study produced by Sealntel maritime analysis revealed. Shipowners could save millions of dollars annually in fuel reductions if berth planning were optimised at a range of major world ports. "A significant part of the process from pilot station to tie-up is highly manual in many ports. Improvements can very likely be achieved through a combination of better IT support for decision-making, as well as stringent process optimisation,"Sealntel COO Alan Murphy said at 2012 Intermodal Europe in Amsterdam in November.
