UN urges SE Asia to obey SAR law

International shipping players and the United Nations have called on Southeast Asian governments to carry out their search and rescue obligations under international law. Speaking to P&H, secretary-general of the International Chamber of Shipping Peter Hinchliffe said there are significant problems and solutions for migrant rescue further afield from Europe, where attention is currently focused on the issue. Disembarkation of migrants has been refused by some Southeast Asian countries, leaving several thousand people in the Andaman Sea and Strait of Malacca. The situation has become untenable for commercial ships called on to rescue migrants in the region.
