US$36bn port transportation investment to position region's ports as leading trade power

Increasing foreign non-oil trade volumes and Gulf-wide port infrastructure and capacity development are playing a vital role in long term economic growth prospects for the region, which will come under the industry spotlight at the World Ports & Trade Summit 2013 taking place in Abu Dhabi from 19-20 March. According to the UAE Federal Customs Authority, foreign exports soared in the first eight months of 2012 with non-oil trade reaching almost US$184.6bn, up US$19bn against the same period in 2011. Export growth of 49% saw total exports jump to just under US$31 bn compared to US$20.6bn the previous year. Foreign non-oil imports were also up by 11%, an increase of US$11.8bn, with 85.1 m t of goods coming into the country from January to August 2012.
