As the eastern Adriatic emerges from the Yugoslav quagmire, the long-delayed development of its ports is restarting, with the upgrade of Croatia's largest port Rijeka. In the 1980s, handling around 10m tonnes annually of cargo, Rijeka was a rival of Slovenia's Koper and Italy's Trieste. But then its volumes plummeted as low as one-third of the former total, caused by economic stagnation, infrastructure backwardness and lack of investment in new equipment.
