As West Africa's three most dominant economies strive to become the gateway to the region, private sector participation in port operations and management has become a necessity. The globalisation of the economy and the internationalisation of trade have had strenuous effects on West African ports. They find themselves in the unenviable position of having to come up with resources to make the necessary investments to modernise their port functions.
