In recent years, the yard gantry crane market has been characterised by the low price of units and a number of mergers amongst equipment manufacturers. In December 2000, Finlandbased Kalmar Industries announced that it was to acquire Holland-based Nelcon. With regard to yard gantry cranes, the deal was particularly significant as it enabled Kalmar to enter the RMG market for the first time and laid open the prospect of an assault on the US market.
