On the surface it seems just like an ordinary purchase. But the decision by Fremantle Ports in Australia to purchase a $ 11m high performance ship unloadcr in June 2001 to boost the bulk handling technology at the Kwinana Bulk Jetty, could signal a healthy seachange for the continuous unloader market . Steve Wade, general manager Marine and Technical Services explains, "The most important issue in the purchase back in June proved to be environmental concerns. Our main customer was very keen to use environ mentally sound equipment. So we had to deliver." The primary user of the unloader, Anaconda Nickel, imports sulphur for its nickel-cobalt project at Murrin Murrin in Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields. It has to be green so with the Port it looked at a variety of options including grab unloaders, a belt unloader and a continuous unloader for the work at Kwinana. "We became convinced that the con- tinuous was the most environmentally friendly with less spillage," enthuses Wade. "The project at Kwinana involves the unloading of sulphur and we are keen to achieve a zero discharge berth."
