Small sport coupes, the longtime favorites of college graduates buying their first new cars, are at a crossroads. Until recently, the field has been dominated by Japanese makes, but innovative new cars from domestic manufacturers are rapidly altering that picture. Both here and abroad, carmakers are struggling with the essential problem of just how much technology to incorporate in a cost-sensitive design.
