Tenderfoot at the Track

When you think you are about to die, your whole life is supposed to flash before you. All I can summon up is the past few weeks, so I figure I'm safe. I'm sliding sideways toward the left edge of turn four at Connecticut's Lime Rock International Raceway, when a car coming fast from behind in the corner hits me hard enough to put a couple of inches of air under the rear tires of Neon No. 1. Time seems to slow as I begin a pirouette off the track while sawing the wheel into opposite lock, a gesture as futile as grabbing for the stern rail on the sinking Titanic.
