Historically, technology has been pushed by vision. Space exploration is no different. The International Space Station may be the most ambitious space project in history, but it could not have been built without previous generations of visionaries who shared a common goal-to inhabit space. Some of their concepts never had a chance; others, like Mir (profiled separately), flew successfully.
