Can hard work, science, and a little booze save a small town? Crystal redden's child-hood home is turning into a poisonous waste- land. Behind the house where she grew up in rural Picher, Oklahoma (population 1,600), abandoned lead and zinc mines have produced sinkholes, crevices, acid that threatens the town's water supply, and levels of lead that could harm the mental health of the area's children. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is studying the possibility of relocating the town.
