Ever since canines switched careers from herder to home-maker, humans have provided them with medical care fit for, well, humans. Dog owners today expect veterinarians and medications to keep their pet's tail wagging into a healthy old age, and pharmaceutical companies are cashing in on the trend. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Americans will spend almost $10 billion this year on medical care for their pets, up almost $3 billion from 2001. "Years ago, when dogs were outdoor watchdogs, if they got sick, it didn't matter," says Gregory Hammer, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. "Now if they get sick, it's all over the house."
