Injury-Free Seatbelts

Seatbelts can cause bruises, fractured ribs and other injuries. Starting with the 2011 Explorer, Ford will be the first automaker to bring to market inflatable seatbelts, designed to reduce head, neck and chest injuries to passengers in the rear seat, where the most vulnerable people-children and the elderly-tend to sit. In a severe collision, the bags inflate within 40 milliseconds, distributing crash forces across five times as much of the body as a conventional seatbelt.
