The USS Albacore was an in-between stage: an unarmed ship that zipped along at up to 30 miles per hour. First designed in the 1850s, pressurized diving outfits let humans ascend rapidly without pausing to let the gases in their bodies decompress, In the 1970s, oil companies used this deep-diving JIM suit for pipeline work.
