My first Doctors Without Borders assignment was in 2017 at a maternity hospital 20 minutes outside Kabul, Afghanistan. I worked in a 20-crib newborn unit that didn't have enough nurses for all the patients, so new mothers had to sit there all day in plastic chairs to feed and change their babies.
