At the start of these tests it was assumed that a good pan would deliver but that the windage on the crank would be little more than frosting on the cake. The amount of power gained was far more than expected. So that you don't assume everything will be this successful, a reality check won't go amiss. First let us consider the problem of test accuracy. None of these before and after tests were ever done on the same day. Since the work force involved a crew of one, none were done the same week. This means we have to keep a close eye on the accuracy of the test results. Here it's probably fair to say that the meticulous procedure has probably resulted in accuracy that is for the most part better than +/- 2 hp. If this is so, then even in a worst-case scenario (minus 2hp) the reduced windage components are still up on output by a healthy margin. Equally relevant is the fact that in a best-case situation the numbers could be greater by as much as 2hp. Also don't be tempted to add up the gains as two different engines with differing pan styles were used for the tests.
