Dick Moroso

Dick Moroso was born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1939. He attended high school in Greenwich, Connecticut, continued to military school in Gainesville, Georgia, and furthered his education at Georgia Tech. Dick's first venture in self-employment found him selling racing products from his parent's home during the early '60s. In 1968 Dick's first official business, Moroso Performance Sales, opened in Greenwich, Connecticut, in a 15,000-square-foot building. Moroso was one of the most successful drag racers ever to compete in the Modified Production category. At the time, it was the most exciting (and popular) class for "doorslammers," making stars out of racers like Lee Shepherd, Larry Kopp and Tony Christian, to name but a few. Back in May of 1966, Moroso set both ends of the D/MSP national record at New York's Island Dragway, running 12.88 at 105.14 mph. In June of the same year, he upped the speed record to 108.04 at Sanford Dragway in Maine, and one month later, re-wrote the record boob once again, turning 12.83 at 108.30 at the fabled York U.S. 30 Dragway. Experimenting as he always did, Dick changed his 1961 Corvette to run C/MP, and lowered that class standard to 12.12 seconds at Englishtown, New Jersey (still during July of 1966), and then captured both ends of the D/MSP record with a 12.79/109.22, also recorded at Englishtown. That September, Moroso was a Class Winner at Indy.
