摘要

Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a cheap agro-by-product and renewable resource which consists mainly ofrnsubstituted phenols. A CNSL based resol resin was used in this study as a binder for particleboards. The resin wasrna copolymer obtained by condensing a mixture of phenol and CNSL with hexamethylenetetramine. Propertiesrnof the board viz. water absorption, tensile strength parallel to the surface, tensile strength perpendicular to thernsurface and compressibility were determined. The effects of the resin content, P:F ratio and CNSL: P ratio ofrnresin binder on the properties of particleboard were also studied. About 10% resin in the moulding formulationrnwas essential to give a board of acceptable quality. The P:F ratio was not very signifi cant in determining thernproperties. It was possible to include up to 50% CNSL without any deterioration in the properties of the board.rnThis is signifi cant from the conservation viewpoint.
