NATURE OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE AND POLLUTION IN THE WESTERN SUBURBS, MUMBAI MEGACITY

Municipal solid waste has been growing exponentially in the metropolis in India much higher than what the planners can combat. Rattled with the increasing population and paucity of space to dispose the waste, the management of the waste to ensure lower pollution is the greatest challenge. These volumes of waste need to be managed sustainably and with maximum efficiency involving segregation, recycling, and waste disposal in a scientific manner. However, in the process of reduction of the waste post segregation, the waste can be converted into resources which would enable the easier dissemination of the MSW and the rising benefits to the households. The purpose of this study was to identify the polluting aspects from the collected waste in the western suburban areas of the Mumbai megacity.
