EXPLORATORY FACTOR ANALYSIS OF SAFETY CULTURE IN RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES IN MALAYSIA

This study examines the construct validity and reliability of the elements of safety culture in research universities in Malaysia. A measuring instrument was developed and analyzed for reliability using an exploratory factor analysis approach. The reliability analysis was determined using Cronbach's Alpha. A pilot test on 120 respondents from five research universities indicates that all four elements of safety culture applied in the instrument, namely rules and procedures, safety policy, reward systems and involvement exhibited high reliability. In this analysis, Principle Components Analysis (PCA) with Varimax rotation method was used. The Keiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy was in the range 0.762 and 0.804 and Bartlett's test of sphericity with p = 0.000 < 0.05 indicating sampling adequacy and thus confirming the appropriateness of factor analysis that the EFA was possible. The instrument was found to be a potential mechanism for measuring safety culture in research universities in Malaysia.
