The present work focuses on the estimation of heavy metal along road side and distance with road at National Highway No-76 between Chittorgarh (NH-76 and NH-9 crossing) to Udaipur (Debari Chauraha) in Rajasthan, India. Top soil sample (0-15 cm) was taken as one sample/10 Km; total 10 sampling points were selected and samples were collected from 0 meter, 25 meter and 50-meter distance from road so total 30 samples were collected both side of road. City dwellers are actually unaware about the heavy metal concentration with road distance. This study is extremely significant since it will give a clear idea of actual concentration of heavy metals in the soil sample collected from the highway. The atomic absorption spectrophotometer method was used to estimate of target heavy metals (Pb, Cd). Concentrations of Pb and Cd were found less with road distance. Concentrations of Cd and Pb were found higher towards Chittorgarh to Udaipur. The highest Pb and Cd concentration were measured 322.46 mg kg~(-1) and 16.40 mg kg~(-1). The average Cd and Pb concentration in soils nearby highways exceeded the USA guideline value. The possible causes of heavy metals concentration are discussed in detail with reference to the literature available and the results obtained during the investigation.
