SPECIAL CONSTABLES HUGH LYNAS FOREMAN & ADAM MCCAPPIN AWARDED THE KING'S POLICE AND FIRE SERVICE MEDAL FOR GALLANTRY (1942)

At approximately 7.00pm on 5th July 1941 six IRA men armed with revolvers entered the premises of McAleavey's Bookmakers situated at the corner of Berry Street and Charlemont Street in the Smithfield area of Belfast. One of the robbers made his way upstairs to the manager's office where the safe was located. The manager was on the landing at the top of the stairs and saw this robber who pointed a revolver at him. The manager, in fear of being shot, ran to his office and slammed the door. He then dragged the safe in front of the door and took cover behind it. When no shots were fired he went to the window and smashed the glass with his fist to attract attention. At this time Special Constables Hugh Forman and Adam McCappin were walking along Charlemont Street. They had just finished a tour of duty guarding General Post Office garages and were returning to Queen Street RUC Station. On hearing the sound of breaking glass coming from the bookmaker's premises they suspected that a robbery may be taking place. Drawing their revolvers they ran to the door of the bookmaker's premises.
