摘要

In this well-researched biography, Wendy Dathan provides a detailed account of the working life of Alf Erling Porsild, a Danish-Canadian botanist whose intimate knowledge of the flora and cultures around Canada's Arctic Circle made him an undisputed authority on matters of the North at the time. Erling (as he preferred to be called) Porsild spent his boyhood on the Arctic Station at Disko Island, West Greenland, collecting plants with his father, Danish botanist Morten Porsild, and accompanying visiting scientists to the island on their exploration trips. In later years, Porsild became known mainly for three reasons: his involvement with the Canadian Reindeer Project, his role as Canadian Vice and later Acting Consul to Greenland during WW Ⅱ and as Chief Botanist of Canada's National Herbarium.
