The Disability Discrimination Act: Disabled Access

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 makes it unlawful for service providers, including chiropody and podiatry services, to discriminate against disabled people. The duties on service providers have been introduced in stages, and from the 1 October 2004 service providers will have to make 'reasonable adjustments' in relation to the physical features of their premises to overcome physical barriers to access. This is therefore an opportune time to review your practice and undertake a 'disability audit' of all the services that you provide. An example of a disability audit tool may be downloaded from the Society's web page (www.feetforlife.org). This need not necessarily take a lot of time and may help you to improve your business, by making your services accessible to disabled people.
