Dell Axim X50 Series Pocket PC

Dell continues to focus on making its Axim Pocket PCs an affordable alternative to some of the more expensive Windows Mobile devices available today. Their latest offering is the Axim X50 series. These attractive and relatively compact devices were designed to replace Dell's first Pocket PC, the Axim X5 series. The device will be available in three models. The top-of-the-line model (and the one we reviewed for this article) is the Axim X50v. This powerful device sports a 624 MHz Intel PXA270 processor, 64MB of SDRAM, and 128 MB of Flash ROM. It has a 3.7-inch color VGA (480 x 640 pixel) touch screen which can display in vertical or horizontal orientations. An onboard Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator with 16MB of video memory enhances the visual experience even further. It has the ability to scale videos formatted for QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) screens to fit the full VGA screen when Windows Media Player 10 is playing them in full-screen mode. In addition to the standard infrared port, the device has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless capabilities built in and ready to use.
