DOE effort to commercialize Triso fuel advances, officials say

A DOE-funded effort to develop Triso nuclear fuel has completed a second round of irradiation testing, with the developers of a pebble bed reactor hoping to build from the program and commercialize the work, industry and government officials said last month. Babcock & Wilcox is producing Triso nuclear fuel particles on a so-called engineering scale, meaning at quantities larger than those that can be produced in a laboratory but not yet commercial amounts. The technology that was developed through the DOE Triso research effort is being transferred to B&W, in anticipation of eventual commercial deployment, John Hunn, program manager and technical lead for the advanced reactor fuel development program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, said in an interview June 30.
